I hate those who complain these kids should not get life sentences for doing something "stupid". Stupid would have been spitting down on the vehicles passing below. What they did was evil. Every one of those kids knew that dropping 10-20 lb rocks down on vehicles going 70 miles per hr. created a potential for disaster. And they did it anyway.
Think about the children who lost their father. They also got a life sentence, and not by their choice.
