Asian Handicap Explained

One of the unique things about football betting, at least in the past, is that you could bet on three different results. There is the obvious decision on which team will win, then you could even get odds on a tie. That made betting on the sport very difficult, especially when dealing with two teams that were essentially even. These days, there is a much easier way to bet on the sport, though. Through the Asian Handicap system, you can make a bet on essentially the goal spread of the game without having to worry at all about the possibility of a tie.

So how does this work? What it essentially does is assign a point spread the game. Instead of betting on Liverpool at -250 to win the game, you might have to bet Liverpool -1.5 goals. This means that Liverpool would be giving up one and a half goals to an opponent, who is obviously inferior in this setting. Why would people want to bet this way? It is nice because you can get pretty close to even money on your bet when you play an Asian Handicap, having to pay only the vig to the sports book, as they have to take some cut from your winnings.

The goal spread is not limited to just this one number, though. It is different from many sports (like hockey), in that the goal spread can change depending upon which teams are playing. You might see one side giving up 3.5 goals on an Asian Handicap if they are in a completely different talent class than the team they are playing. When you bet on these lines, it is important to understand not only a team’s ability and desire to win the game, but also its ability to score many goals in order to cover the number.
